Initial coin offerings (“ICOs”) and token generating events (TGEs) are suddenly emerging as a potent force in raising funds for new technology development and other business activities, with almost $2  billion raised using them this year.  This Quick Hit will review the different types of ICOs and TGEs being seen in the marketplace, explain the SEC’s recent report on the potential applicability of federal securities laws to them and discuss other legal and regulatory issues presented by these increasingly popular and innovative  fundraising tools and how they are related to virtual currencies.
